I See You
Welcome to the ICU for the Soul™.
It’s a strange thing to say to a person who is injured. Yet is may be the most important thing you hear. To be WELCOME means You are not alone.
Using the power of metaphor while listening to the words used by people from various backgrounds, ages, spiritual practices, and forms of loss, I have come to hear the experiences of grief expressed in a common language of medicine. We hurt. We want to heal. Our healthcare system and society have structures and processes in place to support healing from physical injuries. I see a path forward that has not yet been codified for healing the invisible injury of grief.
You do not grieve what you do not love. Grief is the deepest form of Love we can know.
Grief is an invisible injury that needs tending to like any physical injury. We need to have our wound assessed regardless of how it was incurred. We need to have our wound cared for with specific attention attuned to the phases of healing. And most importantly, we need to learn how to discern when the pain we experience is the pain of healing—of regaining capacity, flexibility and agility versus when it is the pain of exacerbation, infection or the acquisition of an additional injury on top of our already wounded self.
ICU for the Soul™ is a novel framework that supports navigating the varied terrains encountered within The Sea of Grief™.
